Genetic Mapping: The Future?
Quite a while before gene sequencing existed, we were able to map genes for chromosomes. In order to do this, we used pedigrees to figure out the origins of different alleles of the same gene. Now, there is quite a bit of scientific terminology being used there, and we will clear that up. A pedigree is a map of a family’s gene transmissions, these tend to be used with shapes. Alleles are forms of a gene that are found on chromosomes. These can be called the things that control characteristics if you will.
This mapping technique could be used to tell what genes were passed from which family members and used to determine mutations. One such case of mapping techniques being utilized in the modern-day is the way Geography and Genetics were closely related as shown by the blog created by 23andme. Essentially they were able to use gene mapping to find out ‘50% of European individuals to within 400 kilometers of their correct country of origin.’ With the current pace of our technology and the usage of gene mapping, we can eventually reach the point in which we can control what genes we may receive which lends itself to a very fascinating future.
